Cornack: We remain committed to working with Gov. Whitmer and lawmakers on both sides of the aisle to restore the right to recover

LANSING, Mich. — (Jan. 29, 2020) — John Cornack, president of CPAN, today released the following statement in response to Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s State of the State address.

“Michigan’s new auto insurance law will have devastating consequences for auto accident victims, drivers and consumers across the state. Most motorists will be woefully underinsured and won’t be able to afford needed rehabilitation or therapy if they get into a catastrophic accident. For years, Michigan’s auto insurance promise meant that if you were in an accident, you would be taken care of—now, that promise has been broken, and any savings to consumers will be minimal at best.

There is still a lot of misinformation out there, and CPAN is redoubling its efforts this year to educate Michigan residents on the importance of maintaining no-fault benefits—as well as how consumers will have to purchase additional liability insurance, potentially cancelling out any savings, and how big insurance companies can continue to discriminate against good drivers based on where they live.

This past September, over 3,000 people showed up at the state Capitol to demand that we ‘fix the fix,’ and we hope that everyone who attended tonight’s address heard them loud and clear. We remain committed to working with Gov. Whitmer and lawmakers across both sides of the aisle to restore the right to recover.”
