George T. Sinas statement on Kelley Miller, other victims, and Michigan’s auto reform travesty of justice

Kelley Miller of Mulliken, Mich., who is quadriplegic and on a ventilator, lost her care this weekend

LANSING, Mich.—(Jan. 17, 2022)—George T. Sinas, general counsel for the Coalition Protecting Auto No-Fault (CPAN), said the following about Kelley Miller of Mulliken, Mich., who lost her care beginning Jan. 16 at 7 a.m. due to changes enacted in July 2021 as part of Michigan’s 2019 auto reform law:

“What is happening to Kelley and other victims similarly situated, is a human tragedy and a travesty of justice. The responsibility for all of this lies squarely at the feet of the Republican leadership of the House and Senate, Governor Whitmer, and the Department of Insurance and Financial Services. Make no mistake about it: these politicians could come together and do something about this mess if they really wanted to. Unfortunately, they do not. They would rather play politics and brag about a $400 insurance premium rebate rather than address the terrible hardship that thousands of Michigan patients are currently suffering as a result of this recent legislation.

“It is obvious that this minimal, and one-time rebate does nothing to help patients who are about to lose life sustaining medical care. Perhaps some families can use it to help pay for the funeral expenses that are likely to be incurred because of these irresponsible laws. Clearly, if anyone wants an example of America's political dysfunction, they need look no further than the Michigan Auto No-Fault Insurance Reform Disaster and the politicians who stubbornly refuse to do anything about it.”
