CPAN Marks National Insurance Awareness Day by Reminding Michigan Drivers to Choose Unlimited, Shop Around
Hoste: Unlimited PIP coverage is the only option that will ensure you and your loved ones will receive the care they need
LANSING, Mich.—(June 28, 2024)— This National Insurance Awareness Day, CPAN is reminding drivers that choosing unlimited personal injury protection (PIP) is the only way to ensure you and your family are protected should you get into a severe auto accident. The consumer protection organization also encourages consumers to shop around for the best policy to save money.
“Under Michigan’s new auto insurance law, unlimited PIP coverage is the only option that will ensure you and your loved ones will receive the care they need if they are a victim of a catastrophic car accident,” said Tim Hoste, president of CPAN. “Any other option of lower PIP coverage can leave your family responsible for costly medical bills, potentially leading to medical bankruptcy.”
Under Michigan’s current auto insurance law, you can choose between several levels of PIP protection—including zero (available only to those with Medicare or other qualifying health insurance); $50,000 (Medicaid option); $250,000; $500,000 and unlimited/lifetime coverage.
All PIP options other than unlimited are capped per accident, which means if you choose a $250,000 plan and get into an accident that causes a life-altering injury such as a traumatic brain injury or a spinal cord injury, that’s all you’ll ever get—leaving you and your loved ones with the burden of costly medical bills.
CPAN encourages Michigan drivers to shop around for the best price for their policy to ensure that they are getting the best deal. Other tips to save money include bundling your auto insurance with homeowners’ or renters’ insurance, driving safely and even ensuring that your policy has the correct millage.
“Comparison shopping is a simple and easy way to ensure that you’re getting the most affordable auto insurance policy,” Hoste said. “Don’t hesitate to reach out directly to insurance agents—most people can find a better rate within one hour of checking prices online or calling insurance agencies directly.”
