Hutchings: Michigan drivers are savvy consumers
LANSING, Mich.—(Jan. 31, 2023)— Devin Hutchings, president of CPAN, made the following statement today in response to a press release issued by the Insurance Alliance of Michigan claiming that Michigan drivers have saved “more than $5 billion” due to auto no-fault reforms:
The powerful and greedy auto insurance lobby can’t create a new reality for Michigan drivers by simply shouting out a misleading headline. Michigan consumers know they haven’t seen game-changing savings in their auto insurance premiums. They’re savvy consumers, and they know the refunds they received in 2022 came not from insurance companies, but rather from the Michigan Catastrophic Claims Association, a fund built on fees to drivers and set aside for the care of victims of catastrophic auto accidents. Not only has the 2019 law not produced real reductions in the amount drivers pay to insurance companies, we are facing huge new premium hikes across the state. This is a desperate attempt to keep the Michigan Legislature from fixing the new auto insurance law, which has failed survivors, care providers, and drivers."
